Marathon couples counseling

Marathon Couples Therapy is a specific type of therapy that is short-term and intensive. A thorough assessment is completed prior to the multi-day span, to determine if couples counseling is indicated.

How it works

Marathon counseling involves 6 hours of assessment, essential and irreplaceable to identify both your strengths and needs:

  • 2 hours of joint assessment (both partners)

  • 2 1-hour individual assessments

  • 1-hour clinical review by the clinician

  • 1-hour feedback session

As your clinician, I structure each therapy day based on your specific needs.

There are risks involved in the marathon approach. Most importantly, this format may bring you and/or your partner more intensely and quickly to the difficult presenting issues, resultant of discomfort. Issues might temporarily become magnified. The outcome of therapy may not always result in resolution. Therefore, I make no guarantees regarding the outcomes for your relationship.

In some cases, the marathon approach is contraindicated and/or unadvisable. Please consult with me to determine if this approach is right for your relationship. Some examples of these types of situations involve addiction, serious violence (or threats of such), untreated severe mental illness, an undisclosed, a current affair that you are unwilling to disclose, or if either partner is a risk to themselves or others.

I may recommend following up with additional couples counseling and/or individual therapy upon completion of marathon counseling. If you are outside of your home locale, I can provide recommendations for Gottman Certified therapists. In this case, your therapist will have you both sign a Release of Information form to allow for this exchange, if further treatment is needed.
