Episode Notes

Male factor infertility contributes to nearly half of all IVF cases, yet it remains one of the least understood aspects of fertility care. In this episode of Perinatal and Reproductive Perspectives, Becky welcomes reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Jeff Deaton to explore what male factor infertility actually means, how it's evaluated, and why both partners should be part of the fertility workup from the very beginning. Drawing on more than 40 years in reproductive medicine—including witnessing the earliest days of IVF in the United States—Dr. Deaton offers both historical perspective and practical guidance.

Together, they unpack the basics of semen analysis, explaining sperm count, motility, morphology, and the common misconceptions surrounding "normal" results. Dr. Deaton discusses when lifestyle changes may help, when referral to a male fertility specialist is appropriate, and how advances like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) transformed treatment for severe male factor infertility.

Beyond the science, the conversation turns to the emotional realities of infertility. Dr. Deaton reflects on how fertility struggles affect relationships, the pressures couples place on themselves during timed intercourse, and why infertility should be viewed as a couple's challenge rather than an individual failure. Becky and Dr. Deaton also discuss the importance of preserving hope while continuing to fully live life during the uncertainty of treatment.

The episode concludes with a discussion of Dr. Deaton's book, When Waiting Becomes Life, which combines patient stories, practical guidance, and reflections on finding meaning during one of life's most difficult seasons. Whether you're navigating infertility yourself, supporting someone who is, or simply wanting to better understand reproductive medicine, this conversation offers compassionate, evidence-based insight into both the medical and emotional sides of the fertility journey.
